MASTER TILES Enquire

The range.

Porcelain, ceramic, marble and natural stone, with the formats, finishes, slip ratings and adhesive for each. Specs are typical for the category; every line ships with its manufacturer’s data sheet.

Porcelain

Fired hotter and pressed denser than ceramic, porcelain absorbs almost no water. That makes it the default for floors, wet areas, commercial fit-outs and outdoors.

Most of what we import is rectified, ground to an exact size after firing, so it can be laid with tight 2–3 mm joints.

Body
Full-body or glazed, absorption ≤ 0.5%
Finishes
Matte, honed, lappato, polished, textured
Formats
600 × 600, 600 × 1200, 1200 × 1200, slab to 1200 × 2400
Thickness
9–10 mm interior · 20 mm outdoor
Slip
P2–P5 / R9–R12, by finish
Typically from
Italy, Spain, East & Southeast Asia

Ceramic

A softer, more porous body under a fired glaze. Ceramic carries colour and gloss that porcelain can’t, and it’s light and easy to cut, which makes it ideal for walls, splashbacks and feature work.

Handmade-look glazed lines bring the uneven, pooled surface of traditional zellige at a trade-friendly price and consistency.

Body
Red or white body, glazed
Finishes
Gloss, satin, crackle, handmade-look
Formats
65 × 200, 75 × 300, 100 × 100, 100 × 300, 300 × 600
Use
Walls and splashbacks; floors only where the PEI rating allows
Typically from
Spain, Italy

Marble

No two tiles are the same. Marble is quarried in blocks, sawn and finished, and every block has its own veining. That is why we select by batch and send a colour-range sample before a large order.

Marble is sensitive to acids and to moisture during setting, so it needs a white, rapid-setting adhesive and sealing before and after grouting.

Stone
Metamorphic, calcite-based
Finishes
Polished, honed, brushed
Formats
305 × 610, 457 × 457, 600 × 600, mosaic sheets
Thickness
10–12 mm tile · 20 mm slab
Use
Bathrooms, vanities, feature floors
Typically from
Italy, Greece, Turkey

Travertine

A banded limestone formed around mineral springs, full of natural voids. Filled and honed, it gives a smooth, warm interior floor; tumbled or unfilled, it’s a classic for courtyards and pool surrounds.

Stone
Sedimentary limestone
Finishes
Filled & honed, tumbled, unfilled
Formats
406 × 610, French pattern, 30 mm pavers and coping
Use
Interior floors, courtyards, pool coping
Typically from
Turkey

Granite

One of the hardest stones there is. Flamed granite, where the face is blasted with heat until it spalls, gives a grippy, frost-proof surface for paving, steps and driveways that takes vehicle traffic for decades.

Stone
Igneous, quartz and feldspar
Finishes
Flamed, honed, polished, bush-hammered
Formats
300 × 600, 600 × 600, steps and coping
Thickness
20 mm · 30 mm
Slip
Flamed R11 typical
Typically from
India, China

Terrazzo

Marble and stone chips cast in cement or resin, then ground and polished flat. As a tile, terrazzo gives the look of a poured floor without the poured-floor program, and it’s tough enough for commercial traffic.

Body
Cement- or resin-bound stone aggregate
Finishes
Polished, honed
Formats
400 × 400, 600 × 600
Use
Floors, commercial interiors, feature walls
Typically from
Italy, Southeast Asia

Mosaic

Small porcelain, glass or stone pieces on a mesh-backed sheet. Mosaic follows the falls of a shower floor, wraps niches and curves, and adds grip underfoot through the extra grout lines.

Material
Porcelain, glass, marble
Shapes
Hexagon, penny round, linear, herringbone
Sheet
About 300 × 300, mesh-backed
Use
Shower floors, niches, splashbacks

Outdoor pavers

20 mm porcelain is the modern outdoor tile: frost-proof, stain-resistant and strong enough to lay loose on gravel or pedestals as well as bonded to a slab. Natural stone pavers cover the traditional end.

Material
20 mm porcelain, granite, travertine, sandstone
Formats
400 × 800, 600 × 600, 600 × 900
Slip
P5 / R11 typical
Install
Bonded to slab, or loose on pedestals or gravel
Use
Alfresco, pool surrounds, paths

Setting materials.

Tile adhesive, the “ceramic glue” on most job sheets, plus grout and waterproofing. All three should be specified with every tile order, because a good tile on the wrong bed still fails.

Reading an adhesive class

Tile adhesives are graded under AS ISO 13007. The letters on the bag tell you what the adhesive can do.

C1
Cementitious, normal adhesion. Porous wall and floor ceramic.
C2
Cementitious, improved adhesion. Needed for dense porcelain and stone.
T
Reduced slip. Tiles stay put on a wall while it sets.
E
Extended open time. More time to place large formats.
F
Fast setting. Stops moisture-sensitive stone from staining or curling.
S1 / S2
Deformable or highly deformable. Takes up movement in large formats, outdoors and over heated floors.

Grout & waterproofing

Cement grout

Polymer-modified cementitious grout (CG2) for most floors and walls, in colours matched to the tile.

Epoxy grout

Stain- and chemical-resistant (RG) for pools, commercial kitchens and shower floors.

Membrane

Wet areas are waterproofed to AS 3740 before any tile goes down. Use an adhesive compatible with the membrane.

General guidance only. Always follow AS 3958.1 and the adhesive manufacturer’s data sheet for your tile and substrate.
